Dr. V Narayanan, a distinguished rocket propulsion expert and aerospace engineer, is set to take the helm as the new Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on January 14, 2025. Early Life and Education

Born in 1964 in the village of Melakattuvilai, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Narayanan’s journey to the stars began in humble surroundings. His father, C. Vanniyaperumal, was a farmer, and his mother, S. Thangammal, a homemaker. Growing up in a rural setting, Narayanan and his siblings studied in a Tamil medium school, with their village receiving its first electricity connection only when he was in Class IX.

Despite these modest beginnings, Narayanan’s academic brilliance shone through:

  • He topped his school’s Class X exams.
  • Earned a First Rank in Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (DME).
  • Secured the First Rank in M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1989, receiving a silver medal.
  • Completed his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 2001.

Professional Career and Achievements

Dr. Narayanan’s career is marked by significant contributions to India’s space program:

Early Career

  • Joined ISRO on February 1, 1984, at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)
  • Worked on solid propulsion systems for Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and Rohini Sounding Rockets.

Cryogenic Expertise

  • Moved to the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in 1989 to focus on cryogenic propulsion.
  • Played a crucial role in making India one of only six countries capable of developing and deploying high-performance cryogenic propulsion systems.

Leadership Roles

  • Appointed Director of LPSC in January 2018.
  • Served as Project Director for the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III) C25 Cryogenic Project.
  • Led the development of the C25 Cryogenic Stage, powering the successful launch of GSLV Mk III.

Key Contributions to Major Missions

  • Instrumental in the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan).
  • Contributed significantly to Chandrayaan missions, including reanalysis and tailoring of landing strategy for Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3.
  • Played a crucial role in India’s human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan, working on human-rating the LVM3 vehicle and ensuring safety systems for service and crew modules.

  • In his five years as LPSC Director, he oversaw the development of 164 liquid propulsion systems for 41 launch vehicle missions and 31 spacecraft missions.
  • He completed ISRO’s 20-year (2017–2037) Propulsion Road Map, laying out plans for future developments.
  • His expertise in cryogenic propulsion is expected to drive innovations in launch vehicle technology.
  • As Chairman of the Project Management Council-Space Transportation System (PMC-STS), he will play a crucial role in decision-making for all launch vehicle programs and projects.
